MyMotorCycleCheck.comtop tips for used buyers March 2015:

800 Dragster, YZF125 R and Adventure R praised as market picks up

MyMotorCycleCheck.com - the UK's No.1 motorbike and scooter provenance website - has saved many a biker from making an expensive two-wheeled mistake. In these monthly bulletins its Valuation Team's expert reveals significant trends in the UK market and suggests three wise buys.

  • Highly desirable: MV Agusta 800 Dragster

  • Safe bet: Yamaha YZF125 R

  • Used star: KTM 1190 Adventure R

MyMotorCycleCheck.com's Rob Hobson commented: "For our highly desirable model this month we've chosen the MV Agusta 800 Dragster. This stunning looking bike has become less of a gamble now the brand has an official factory-supported UK importer. Remember, as well as revealing a bike's history, MyMotorCycleCheck.com also provides valuations - a great tool for haggling with dealers or private sellers.

"In terms of bikes that hold their value, safe bets don't come much safer than the Yamaha YZF125 R... so long as you choose wisely. Widely considered to be the best of the sports 125cc models out there, a good one will always attract attention. A word of warning though, many carry battle scars so do your homework and check before you buy."

"For our used star we've chosen the KTM 1190 Adventure R. Frequently overshadowed by the BMW, this is a reliable take-it-anywhere option. So long as you do a history check to ensure the one you're looking at is what it claims to be - for instance, that it hasn't been previously written-off - the Adventure R has a lot going for it."

As to market trends, Hobson commented: "The bike market often needs a glimmer of spring to kick start it, but not this year. It is great news that so far in 2015 new bike sales are up 11% on the same period in 2014. When you consider that the weather has been cold and damp, which usually restricts showroom traffic, this bodes well as we enter the main season.

"In fact, the new bike market has now recorded year-on-year growth for 13 consecutive months - a very welcome recovery following years in the doldrums. While it comes as little surprise that the naked and adventure sport sectors continue to show the biggest increases, there are positive signs for all styles beyond super sport.

"Demand for stock in the used market remains strong and looking ahead we can only see values increasing pretty much across the board. We often hear that ‘Sports bikes are dead' but that's far from the whole story. What we have are clear divisions within this sector. Dealers want the top quality low mileage clean examples, while private buyers are looking for good mechanical integrity older examples for track day use.

"Perhaps due to an increase in fees on the best known internet auction site, sellers are looking for other routes. The quality of online adverts has improved dramatically over the last five or six years, as has the quality of many of the bikes offered, although we'd always urge consumers to use a provenance service such as mymotorcyclecheck.com."
