Magden helps customer pioneer home extension

North of England plastic building products distributor Magden has helped a pioneering company carve a niche with quick-build extensions for disabled people needing home adaptations.

Huddersfield-based My Eco Space has a background in creating super-insulated garden rooms and home offices.

The company turned to Magden when it wanted durable, low-maintenance and sustainable products for the exterior of its latest project to create an eco-friendly extension.

Director Kevin Moore explained: “We needed to minimise waste as we are working to the sustainable building code, so we worked with Magden to find the best option,” he said.

The extension, in this case a wet room, was highly insulated, achieving an A rating. Magden recommended Kavex featheredge textured cladding and K16 fascia, both from Kestrel, to ensure minimal waste and a good finished product.

Kevin explained the background to the project: “We were approached by someone who needed their home adapted and had seen one of our garden offices.

“After a site survey we worked with Kirklees Council, the resident and our suppliers to create something that would provide a ground floor wet room, with minimal disruption and without having to reduce the existing living space.”

Kevin, who has a background as an energy consultant, explained that it was important that the materials used were both sustainable and durable, to minimise the carbon footprint of the building and make it low-maintenance for the client.

The wet room took just a week to install, including all of the interior fittings, and Kevin is now planning to market the extensions across the UK.

“The beauty of this extension is that a house can be readapted once the disabled person has moved. It can either be taken away or converted into a porch, which is a significant cost advantage over having to change any internal modifications,” Kevin added.

Laurence Hicks, commercial director for Magden said: “As a company we work with our customers to find the right products to help them develop their businesses.

“This has been an exciting project to work on and My Eco Space have developed a truly innovative product that could have far reaching benefits for social housing right across the UK.”
