Football raconteur Barry Fry and comedian Gary Skyner help raise funds for Dementia UK at Barrett Steel event / 30.03.15

[image]Football raconteur, Barry Fry and much loved Liverpudlian comedian, Gary Skyner helped to raise over £10,000 when they appeared at a recent charity dinner for Dementia UK at the Leeds United Elland Road ground. The event was organised by Barrett Steel Limited, part of the Barrett Steel Group, whose head office is in Bradford.

The evening opened with a moving speech from Sheila Wainwright who cared for her husband for a number of years whilst he was affected by dementia.

Auction items included numerous sporting items, including a Michael Schumacher signed shirt which sold for £1000 and a Lionel Messi shirt which raised £700. A novelty item of a giant pork pie from Robinson's Farm Shop in Halifax also sold for £300.

Dementia UK provides specialist Admiral nurses who give practical and emotional support to families affected by dementia. Hilda Hayo, Chief Admiral Nurse, explains:

"On behalf of everyone at Dementia UK and the families that we support, we want to thank Barrett Steel and everyone who came to the sporting dinner. Our partnership with Barrett Steel is vitally important to supporting families in Northern England who are caring for a loved one with dementia. We do this through services such as our Admiral Nurses in Kirklees, and fundraising events like these will help us bring more Admiral Nurses to families who need their support. With over £10,000 being raised on the night this is enough to support 500 families struggling to care for someone with dementia."

Barrett Steel's Commercial Development Director, Rob Ridge, comments: "We had a really enthusiastic response from the audience of 300, including Barrett's customers, suppliers and employees. Barry Fry, director of football at Peterborough United, is an excellent story teller and he entertained us with his tales from the dressing room. We were also given a great comedy routine from Gary Skyner. We'd like to thank everyone who attended or donated for their generosity and support."
