The space needs of a business change over time and when commercial diesel power and transmission distributor, Mitchell Powersystems, needed more space to realise a plan to centralise distribution they called in in Smart Space. The company has provided additional loading bay facilities, liberating valuable warehouse space at the Sutton-in-Ashfield centralised distribution site and has done so at modest cost and with minimal disruption to normal site operation.
“Service is a priority for our customers and we decided that we could provide speedier deliveries from centralised distribution hub rather than from regional depots,” Mitchell’s logistics manager, Gene Laker, explained, “Clad in ocean blue panels to match our existing building, the new canopy gives us sheltered vehicle loading and unloading space and an area for orders to be collated. Foundations for a conventionally framed extension were already in place, but standard methods of construction would have been costly, time consuming and highly disruptive to our business.”
The new Smart Space canopy measures 20 by 25 metres and is a light weigh permanent steel structure. Vehicles can be loaded and unloaded under cover with some additional outdoor storage. The new building permits more efficient use of space within the main warehouse for better stock management.
Based on strong, but light weight, roll-formed steel sections in place of the more usual hot rolled steel, the Smart Space permanent building system imposes less ground loading forces and so requires lighter and less expensive foundations than normal construction methods, saving time and money. At Mitchell’s, foundations for a conventional extension were in place, enabling what is already a very fast building system to be implemented even more speedily by Smart Space at a cost of just under £50,000.
As Gene Laker noted, “The installation went very well, the guys worked hard to get it completed with little distraction to our business. On-site time was less than one month. We are very pleased with the finished buildings.”
Many styles of buildings are available from Smart Space for temporary or long term use. Systems are based on light weight modular construction that can be scaled to meet most needs and customised with cladding, windows and doors to match existing structures. Installed in a fraction of the time and cost of conventional buildings while meeting all the requirements of the latest building regulations, Smart Space buildings enable businesses to respond quickly to market changes. Any mechanical services required such as heating lighting, air-conditioning and power can be installed as part of a complete express turnkey package.
