The New York Philharmonic orchestra with musical director Alan Gilbert is about to start its Spring 2015 tour with a return to Dublin after 19 years plus concerts in London as well as Paris, Cologne, Amsterdam, Luxembourg and Frankfurt.
The tour runs from 16 April to 1 May and the London stop, 17-19 April, marks the Philharmonic's second residency at The Barbican Centre under the auspices of its International Associates initiative.
The Philharmonic will present two performances of its acclaimed staging of Stravinsky's ‘Petrushka', in association with theatre puppet company Giants Are small. The first performance will take place at the Young People's Concert and the second will also include Bartok's The Miraculous Mandarin Suite, and Debussy's Jeux.
Also in London the Philharmonic musicians will perform highlights from recent CONTACT! new music concerts including: Daniel Bjarnson's ‘Five Possibilities'; Timon Andres's ‘Early to Rise'; Missy Mazzoli's ‘Dissolve Oh My Heart'; Esa-Pekka Salonen's ‘Hommunculus' for string quartet and Shulamit Ran's ‘Mirage' for five players.
The residency will also feature some of the Philharmonic's signature educational projects, including a performance of works by Very Young Composers of New York and London and an interactive installation by Musicjelly, the London-based visual sampling project that experiments with the use of video and new media in music and composition and performance.
In additional, musical director Alan Gilbert will present the annual Royal Philharmonic Society Lecture, speaking on ‘Orchestras in the 21stCentury: A New Paradigm on 15 April at 19:00 at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama's Milton Court concert hall.
