FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Friends to represent Cornwall at the Visit England Awards
Out of thousands of entries, two friends from Cornwall will attend the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence - the highest accolade in English tourism - representing their businesses side by side at the ceremony in Gateshead on 11thMay.
Pat Smith, owner of Bosinver Farm Cottages, will be hoping to come out on top in the Self-Catering Holiday Provider of the Year category, while Janie Cooksley's boutique retreat Lower Barns is nominated for the Bed and Breakfast award; both businesses have made it to the top five nationally in their respective categories.
Malcolm Bell, Chief Executive of Visit Cornwall, said: "I am thrilled that these two businesses will be representing Cornwall at the VisitEngland Awards; I can't over-emphasise what an achievement this is, given the tens of thousands of potential entries in their very popular categories."
He added: "A shortlisting for the VisitEngland Awards reflects world-class quality and it is heartening to see two home-grown businesses with unique and individual approaches being recognised - I wish them every success."
Pat and Janie have been friends for years, enjoying cycling holidays and supporting each other as informal business mentors.
The pair also share a vocation for fundraising, and together have raised money for the local Children's Hospice and for a new scanner at Treliske A&E by organising and taking part in charity cycle rides, including riding from John O'Groats to Lands End.
Bosinver Farm Cottages is a unique collection of holiday properties set in an idyllic hidden valley, and provides unforgettable family holidays in luxurious yet sustainable surroundings.
Pat said that the VisitEngland nomination represented a huge achievement: "At Bosinver we have a very strong ethos, with a focus on sustainability, outdoor activities and exploring the natural world - it's fantastic to see those values recognised at a national level."
Lower Barns Boutique B&B oozes individual style, and is designed as a magical get-away for couples looking for glamour and romance in a beautiful countryside location.
Janie was overjoyed when she heard the announcement: "Lower Barns is quirky, colourful and eclectic with an adventurous feel - it doesn't fit the mould when you think ‘B&B' - we are over the moon that our individual approach won the hearts of the judging panel."
Bosinver Farm Cottages and Lower Barns are just 15 minutes apart in South Cornwall near St Austell and a short distance from another shortlisted business in the VisitEngland Awards - The Lost Gardens of Heligan.
Their success is evidence that this often overlooked part of Cornwall is diversifying its offering - tapping into new niches and appealing to visitors who look for individuality and a strong ethos when choosing their holiday destination.
The VisitEngland Awards ceremony will be held at Sage Gateshead on 11thMay; Pat and Janie will be making the journey together, though not on bicycles on this occasion.
