Contactum Unveils Amendment 3 Compliant ‘Defender'

It's robust, it's Amendment 3 compliant, and it's here! The non-combustible Defender single phase consumer unit range from Contactum has been revealed to the industry. With a pedigree in manufacturing British quality circuit protection, Contactum's Defender beats your average consumer unit with a styling that is aesthetically attractive, and still packs a punch with its versatility.

This modern sleek design is suitable for all installations and offers a comprehensive range comprising 12 different enclosures sizes. IP2X rated and compliant with BS7671 and 17thEdition Wiring Regulations, the Defender allows up to a 22 module board as standard and installers can combine boards to increase the number of outgoing ways. This flexible board configuration enables optimal combinations of RCD, MCB and RCBO use - there are even pre-populated configurations available.

Amendment 3 to the Wiring Regulations has been introduced as a result of London Fire Brigade reporting that a rising number of domestic house fires were being caused as the result of the consumer units catching fire. The purpose of this Regulation is to contain any fire within the enclosure and to minimise flames from escaping, caused mainly as a result of poorly installed connections and poorly located units in the home.

Whilst metal (steel) enclosures are deemed to offer the best non-combustible characteristics, any installed consumer units with plastic enclosures is not necessarily a fire risk if the consumer unit and its incorporated components conform to the relevant product standard(s), do not have latent defects, and have been installed correctly to the manufacturer's instructions. It is however, better to be safe than sorry!

The amended Regulations include changes to:

  • the electrical condition report section

  • new requirements for mobile and transportable electrical units

  • the installation of luminaires and light fittings, bringing them in line with the latest international and European standards

It also includes a NEW Regulation 421.1.201, which requires that within domestic (household) premises, consumer units and similar switchgear assemblies shall comply with BS EN 61439-3 and shall have their enclosure manufactured from non-combustible material, or enclosed in a cabinet or enclosure constructed of non-combustible material and complying with Regulation 132.12.

Using London Underground approved low smoke and fume paint on the enclosure, the Defender offers maximum protection, ample cable space and an extensive number of cable entry points allowing easy installation.
