New initiative to promote healthy eating in Stafford

Residents in Stafford are to be offered the opportunity to improve their cookery skills whilst saving money as part of a new initiative to promote a healthy lifestyle.

Thanks to funding from Stafford and Surrounds ‘Health and Wellbeing' Commissioning Prospectus, Stafford and Rural Homes (SARH), in partnership with Stafford Sports College, will be delivering the Feel Good Food project.

Now the search is on to find a Community Nutrition Project Worker to help spread the message that a healthy lifestyle starts with a good diet.

Laura MacPhee, SARH Community Involvement Officer, explained: "Feel Good Food will help local people to gain a better understanding of what goes into a balanced diet. Everyone taking part will also find out how to grow their own fruit and vegetables and receive advice on budgeting and menu planning to help reduce their monthly food bills.

"Feel Good Food is all about encouraging families to have the confidence to cook wholesome meals that are nutritional and represent real value for money."

Key to the project is the appointment of a Project Worker (20 hours per week) who will be responsible for planning, arranging and developing a nutrition and healthy eating training course whilst monitoring the impact of the project on the local community. They will also be tasked with recruiting and training a team of community volunteers.

"This is an exciting opportunity for someone with experience of working with volunteers, a good standard of education and a basic knowledge of nutritional principles," Laura said.

"They will be leading an ambitious project which will see families and individuals benefit from the practical activities to improve their diet whilst being encouraged to share their knowledge and new skills with the wider community."

Further information about Feel Good Food, and how the initiative will help promote the benefits of good cooking and a balanced diet, is available from SARH Community Involvement Officer, Laura MacPhee on 0800 111 4554 or laura.macphee@sarh.co.uk. An application form for the role of Community Nutrition Project Worker can be downloaded from www.sarh.co.uk or by contacting the SARH Human Resources Team on 01785 216772. Closing date for applications is Monday, May 4.
