My Car Check Tradeis the trade valuations arm of CDL Vehicle Information Services. Based on cutting-edge industry data and feedback from independent and franchised dealers, these monthly bulletins highlight the most significant trends in the UK motorbike and scooter markets.
My Car Check Trade's motorcycle expert, Rob Hobson, commented: "As the used bike market heads into the main selling period, dealers who made wise decisions at the turn of the year in terms of stock bought will now be reaping their rewards. With no major drop in values over the quieter months, we can expect retail values to firm up as demand increases.
"The new market maintained its positive start to the year with 16,282 machines registered on the 15 plate during March, an increase of more than 11% for the same month last year. Overall, the market is running at just under 12% up for the year to date. Of the top 10 models, four are over 125cc. The impressive Yamaha MT-09 Tracer, which fits well with current demands, sits in second place. The 651-1,000cc engine capacity sector is showing the biggest growth and the naked style sector continues to grab market share.
"The value of aftermarket accessories is an interesting factor. We've seen a couple of bikes recently with all the extras - suspension and exhaust upgrades, power commanders etc - where the ticket price didn't reflect what must've been a substantial outlay. One of the joys of bike ownership is personalizing your ride. Just remember that beauty is in the eye of the beholder - those pink anodised nuts and bolts won't be to everyone's liking when the time comes to sell!
"More switched on dealers and traders generate significant profits by stripping a bike of expensive aftermarket accessories, fitting the standard kit and listing the extras individually on an auction website. This practice has been common in the Ducati world for years, but is just as relevant across all market sectors. Are you making the most of these opportunities?
"As we wait to discover the outcome of the general election, and what the implications might be for the two-wheel market, we look ahead to next month and the mass exodus across to the Isle of Man. This event always gives the trade a boost as owners prepare existing bikes or look to buy new ready for the trip."
