PRESS RELEASE for immediate use / 07 May 2015

Derya Erdem | Emma Williams | Hilary Mayo
23 May to

Windy Walk, 2015 | Derya Erdem
Derya Erdem’s abstract paintings
find their power in the artist’s mastery of composition and an uplifting
palette of primary and secondary colours. Inspired by dreams and the collected
histories of her years living in Cornwall, works in this exhibition explore the
relationship between human nature and the environment, fusing fiction and
primitive imagery with the artist’s passion for the colours and textures of coastal
minutiae.
The vivid colour,
flattened perspective and rhythmic composition of Emma Williams’ paintings
reflect the artist’s background in printed textile design and bring a
contemporary edge to the classic genres of still life and landscape. Pairing
interior spaces with framed views of beach, town and sea she works in a
distinctly decorative style, where geometric, almost cut-out areas of colour
are balanced against intense bursts of floral and linear detail.
Hilary Mayo’s ceramics
vessels and sculptural pieces are inspired by fragments of visual memory, and this
new collection of works respond to Mayo’s recent stint as a volunteer at the
Rio de Janeiro Street Child World Cup. Drawn from photographs documenting the
Vidigal favela and the notorious ‘City of God’ suburb, the fragile rims, cracked
glazes and imperfections in her work reflect both the poverty of the people who
live there, and the beauty that can still be found in the details.
This exhibition will be
on show from 23 May to 27 June.
