TRAIN COMPANIES TRAIN STAFF NOT TO OFFER CHEAP TICKETS.

An undercover investigation by C4s' DISPATCHES revealed how rail company First Great Western hides cheap ticket options from customers.

An undercover reporter posing as a trainee was told off for suggesting to offer cheaper tickets.

The trainer explained if a customer was offered cheaper tickets that, "Because if you do it, what's the customer going to expect every day? Everybody to do it.

The trainer also said other fare saving options like ‘split tickets' were not to be offered. These are multiple tickets for a train that stops during the journey and can save onaverage40% on more than 40% of journeys, but it's up to the customer to ask for them.

The Big Train Operators withhold this information, but independent online services like TrainSplit and Raileasy offer these upfront.

David Sidebottom from Transport Focus said "We know the ticketing system is complicated, it needs to be simplified. There should be the responsibility back on the train company now to ask you what you want and sell you the right ticket."

If the "right ticket" is the cheapest, the passenger should be offered a split saving if there is one.
