Pictured is the Black Swan in Penrith
The Black Swan is owned by Ken and Jennifer Pallister, who live in the village. Theybought the pub eight years ago because theywerekeen to see it remain as a freehouse. The couple also own Cumbrian Homes, which uses Abacus Manufacturing Group's bathroom products in all newdevelopments, and came across Lustrolite on a visit to thecompany's impressive manufacturing andshowroompremises nearHarrogate.
Lustrolite is an advanced multi-layer acrylic sheet that looks just like glass and comes in a range ofninecontemporary high gloss colours. It minimises the need for joints so, unlike tiles with their regular grout lines, the panels provide an elegant, unbroken aesthetic. Consequently, the product is easy to keep clean and with its non-stick surface, which will not promote mould, bacteria, soap or calcium build up, it is more hygienic.
Having initially trialled Lustrolite in one en-suite at the Black Swan, ten sheets of Lustrolite Arctic White have now been used during the refurbishment of four of the seven en-suites. The sheets have been applied directly over the top of the existing tiling, saving both the time and disruption involved with hacking off and re-plastering. This is possible because Lustrolite is co-extruded to produce a solid colour with no bleed through from the surface behind. The hardened surface coat is highly resistant to harsh chemicals, like bleaches and solvents, does not scratch or chip and rivals the durability of tiles and glass.
Unlike tiling which relies on a specialist tiler, or glass that must be precisely templated and then sent away for fabrication, Lustrolite panelsare easily cut on site and and can be installed rapidly over new or existing wall finishes. While the initial price per square metre tends to be higher than for tiles, the installation costs are less as the fitting time and skilled labour required are considerably reduced. Weighing less than a quarter of a traditional glass sheet, Lustrolite has 20 times the impact strength.Stephen Wilcox, manager of the Black Swan, comments: "Unlike tiles, you don't get black mould with Lustrolite and it's much quicker to install. We're very happy with the product;it's a perfect surface which means it's a lot easier to maintain and it looks clean."
