Hornsea charity sportive attracts biggest female field and raises over £1000

An annual cycle sportive that takes advantage of the quiet country lanes of Holderness has attracted its biggest ever female field and raised over £1000 for Hornsea Rotary.

The annual William's Farm Kitchen summer sportive took place on 21stJune and attracted its biggest ever field of 371 riders, including 85 women, who were blessed with perfect cycling weather and enjoyed home-made flapjack en route and burgers and Wold Top Brewery's cycling inspired beer, Hello Vélo, at the finish.

Co-organiser of the event and William's Farm Kitchen owner, Mark Farnsworth, was delighted with the event: "We had over 50 more riders this year than last, which means that we are able to give Hornsea Rotary over £1000 to support the great work that they do in the local area.

"What was really encouraging was the number of people (140) who took part in the shorter, 60k circuit this year; many of whom were competing in a sportive for the first time. Thanks to everyone who supported the event and to co-organiser Paul Kilvington from Hull Thursday Road Club and Paragon Data services and Wold Top Brewery for their support, too."

The William's Farm Kitchen sportive was one in a series of three charity sportives that formed the Welcome to Yorkshire supported Mini Tour with Le Petit Départ in Skipton on 31st May and the Action 100 in York on 16th August. Each rider who completes all three rides will receive a free Welcome to Yorkshire cycling jersey. The three events were selected to offer cyclists a great mix of routes and scenery which will take in some great areas of the county whilst raising a combined sum of £25,000.

The next William's Farm Kitchen charity ride will take place on 6thSeptember and offers a choice of 80k and 50k routes.

William's Farm Kitchen is an award-winning farm shop, butchery and café. It has outlets at Hornsea Freeport and Sledmere House, Driffield and will shortly be opening a food hall at Tong Garden Centre, Bradford.
