The Radisson Blu Edwardian, Guildford from 16.7.15
A VIP private view of the much-acclaimedMagna Carta 800 Embroideriesand launch of the Magna Carta Embroidery book will take place at theRadisson Blu Edwardian, Guildfordhotel,on July 15th. The Mayors of Guildford and Runnymede will attend alongside other high profile guests.
From 16thJuly, all twelve of the embroideries will be on display alongside a replica of the 1297 Magna Carta to celebrate Radisson Blu Edwardian's coveted status of " official hotel of the 800thAnniversary celebrations".
The Magna Carta Embroidery panels are the official embroidery of the Magna Carta 800 year and were commissioned by Runnymede Council and designed and created by Pirbright resident, Rhoda Nevins, a member of the Royal School of Needlework.
The panels will be on display at the hotel throughout the summer and open to the public from 16thJuly throughout the summer.
"I am very excited that the panels will be on display at theRadisson Blu Edwardian, Guildford hotelover the summer as I have a long and close connection with city of Guildford. My late husband was a former Mayor and I embroidered a large panel of the Guildford skyline in his memory, which is on permanent display in the bar at GLive. It is a real honour to have been invited to display the embroideries at this beautiful hotel and I hope as many people as possible will come and see the panels while they are there", says Rhoda.
The panels tell the story of how the barons persuaded King John to agree to Magna Carta, arguably the most important legal document in our history, laying the foundation for justice and freedom, not only in this country but throughout the world. This historic document was the first to establish the principles that even a king must - like his subjects - obey the law, and that punishment without trial is wrong. Since the 13th Century it has continued to underpin legal systems across the world and is still relevant today, forming the basis of the constitutions of countries such as the United States of America, Australia, Canada and India.
Rhoda, who was part of the team that embroidered the Duchess of Cambridge's wedding dress, recently embroidered two panels for the official Magna Carta Garden at the Chelsea Flower Show, and was present at all the main events during the celebratory weekends where she was presented to HRH Prince William and other dignitaries.
