VIPs join Midlands’ manufacturer for Queen’s Award presentation

A host of manufacturing organisations and senior business figures joined Midlands’ manufacturing success story T A Savery & Co this week as the company was officially presented with the Queen’s Award for International Trade.

Coventry-based T A Savery & Co, which trades as energy absorption specialist, Oleo International, and hydraulic solutions provider, Savery Hydraulics, took the Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire on an exclusive factory tour, and met with senior figures in the global manufacturing community and local business networks, as it was officially awarded the coveted Queen’s Award for International Trade.

The company has been manufacturing products in the UK for many years and currently exports 85% of its products to overseas markets, with subsidiary operations across Europe and the rest of the world. Based in the UK since inception, the history of the business stretches back to the 1600s, when Captain Thomas Savery patented the first steam engine. With both areas of the business still manufacturing products for the automotive, rail, elevator, aerospace, ministry of defence and industrial sectors, T A Savery has long been a pioneer of the UK manufacturing sector.

Mr Timothy Cox, the Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire commented on the T A Savery success story, as he handed over the Queen’s Award for International Trade. He said: “The Queen’s Award is the greatest recognition a British business can receive. As a company that exports over 80% of its products overseas, the numbers speak for themselves, and it is clear that T A Savery is a deserving recipient of this award.”

Also joining T A Savery & Co as it was presented the Queen’s Award were delegates from the UKTI, the Institute of Export, the Manufacturing Technology Centre, the EEF, and a host of local business networks from the Midlands, including representatives from the Chamber of Commerce, and local government officials and dignitaries.

The company’s Chairman, Sul Sahota used the occasion to talk about the importance of continuous innovation for a manufacturing business serving overseas markets, explaining that innovation is at the heart of all of T A Savery’s operations.

Oleo International recently manufactured the world’s largest elevator buffer, which will be installed into some of the world’s tallest buildings. The buffer is the only one in the world designed to support elevator drop speeds in excess of 20 metres per second. T A Savery is also breaking records after recently unveiling the world’s first ever ecommerce website for Hydraforce hydraulics components.

Sul Sahota said on the day: “This award is a great achievement for every person who puts time and effort into the T A Savery business, both in the UK and in our operations overseas. Without the skills and expertise of our people, we wouldn’t be as successful as we are today.

“To receive this award is a great honour but it’s just the start of a transition at T A Savery. We have an ambitious growth plan that we are going to follow over the next few years.”

Both arms of the T A Savery & Co business pride themselves on great British design, engineering, and quality.

Lesley Batchelor, OBE director general of the Institute of Export explained: “Companies like T A Savery are the life blood of the UK. Their skills and expertise are what keeps us leading the way in engineering and design. The Queen's award is well deserved and will continue to enhance an already brilliant British business and we congratulate them warmly. It was a great honour to be at the presentation.”
