Beards: An Unshaved History

By Dr Kevin Clarke

Book Trailer

Dr Kevin Clarke, bestselling author of Porn - from Andy Warhol to X-Tube, turns his attention to facial hair trends in the LGBTQ community.

Kevin walks us through the various identities that members of the gay community adopt and his interpretation of those identities, such as the ‘clones' of the 1970s and their recent return. Supporting his commentary are interviews and beard facts, as well as spectacular photography that illustrates how erotic and captivating a man's beard can be.

Kevin's motivation to document the history of the beard started with his fascination with the gay clone look of the 1970s and why it suddenly became a major trend again after the clean-shaven AIDS crisis years. Kevin demonstrates what he discovered while searching for the origins on this revival of the "Golden Age of Promiscuity" in Gay Society, and then what made it spill over to mainstream straight culture.
