Malaysia Sikh Band to Perform at
Blair Castle for First Time
Blair Castle is hosting a very special performance from the Malaysia
Sikh Band on Tuesday 4th August while on their first ever visit to
Scotland to compete in the World Pipe Band Championships.
As part of their trip, the pipe band, also known as the Sri
Damesh Band, are marking their historic Scottish connections with a visit to
Highland Perthshire where they will meet with members of a clan that are
descendants of Captain Thomas Rattray, the founder of one of the first ever
Sikh pipe bands in India in 1856.
During their whistle-stop tour of Highland Perthshire, the
band, led by Pipe Major Harvinder Singh, will visit Castle Menzies where
Maharaja Duleep Singh, the last Maharaja of the Sikh Empire, once lived. Then,
they will visit Kenmore where the Maharaja’s son is buried in the local church
and will perform in the village before visiting Blair Castle to perform in the
grand Castle forecourt.
Andrew Bruce Wootton, General Manager at Blair Castle said:
“It is a great privilege to welcome the Malaysia Sikh Band
to Blair Castle and hear our native bagpipes being celebrated by musicians from
other parts of the world. We are also delighted to mark their 150 year
connection between the Sikhs, Scotland and, in particular, Highland Perthshire.
We wish them lots of Highland luck for the upcoming World Pipe Band
Championships.”
