‘Bound Feet Blues: A Life Told In Shoes'is written and performed by Yang-May Ooi, directed by Jessica Higgs, produced by Eldarin Yeong and designed by Hua Tan. Bound Feet Blues is Yang-May's personal story centred on the tradition of foot binding, as practiced by her great-grandmother. This unconventional memoir interweaves Yang-May's story with those of the women in her family to create a rich, engaging show. Bound Feet Blues explores Yang-May's experiences of being a Chinese-Malaysian woman in the UK, her unique 'coming out' story, cultural reflections of what it means to be a woman, and an exploration into mother-daughter relationships.
Female desirability, identity and empowerment are explored in this personal story told through the shoes in Yang-May's life - from stilettos and expensive Italian pumps to trainers, hiking boots and biker boots.
"Bound Feet Blues is easily one of the most engaging, entertaining and moving one-woman shows I have seen. Moving with equal care from global questions of gender identity, to everyday family relationships, this play will make you consider what it means to be a wife, a mother, a daughter and a woman."- Everything Theatre
From introvert writer to performing her personal story, live on stage, at Conway Hall and Tristan Bates Theatre in 2014, Yang-May has evolved to become the confident storyteller she is today, shining in her 50s. Yang-May is now preparing for the release of her memoirs both as a theatre piece and a published book, representing a dramatic departure from the fictional novels she's known for. Rehearsals are due to commence shortly, ahead of the incredible three-week run of Bound Feet Blues, live in the heart of the West End, from November 24th. The show is part of the South East Asian Arts Festival 2015 and funded by The Arts Council and The Housing Finance Corporation.
