PRESS RELEASE
Release date: 10th August 2015
Midlands engineering expert one of the first to gain new IED
recognition
A Midlands engineering design specialist has become one of just a dozen professionals in the UK to be awarded Chartered Technological Product Designer (CTPD) status.
Rob Marchant, the Managing Director of design and development expert MarchantCain Design, has become one of the first engineering designers in the country to receive the recognition from the Institution of Engineering Designers (IED), after it received a Royal Charter in 2012. The accolade is only awarded following a strict peer review which evaluates that Marchant can use technical knowledge and humanistic design understanding to optimise the application of latest advances, including a critical evaluation in design thinking, and an ability to create and challenge a client brief.
The application process, which takes an average of three months to complete, also challenges product designers to apply a range of creative and scientific design methods to solve a product design problem, demonstrate leadership and effective interpersonal skills, and prove their commitment to professional standards.
Sue Sloan, head of membership enquiries and applications at the IED explained: “The Chartered Technological Product Designer award is a very new recognition that we have so far only awarded to a select number of people. Rob registered his interest a few months ago and, because he is very good at what he does as technological product designer, he went through our assessment process very easily.”
Rob Marchant has played a key role in the growth of MarchantCain Design over the last ten years as the company has introduced a number of new products to the niche vehicle market. Over recent months, the company has released an active aerodynamic system and a new diffuser system to the international automotive market, both of which are improving the performance of new vehicles and their fuel efficiencies. The company’s diffuser system is already included in the design of the Porsche 918 Spyder model.
On gaining Chartered Technological Product Designer status, Rob Marchant said: “This is a great achievement for me and everyone at MarchantCain. We pride ourselves on providing innovative design engineering solutions. To become a Chartered Technological Product Designer demonstrates that I have the track record and experience required to help manufacturers experience new methods of design.”
The Institution of Engineering Designers has now opened up its Chartered Technological Product Designer certification to product designers outside of the IED network and is hoping to attract more professionals to the qualification.
