Call for potential PR apprentices

Young people hoping for a career in public relations and related creative industries are being offered a helping hand by a Stafford-based agency.

Changeworks Communications has teamed up with several other firms and organisations from across the region to stage a special skills event at St Alban's House Enterprise Centre, St Alban's Road for would-be PR apprentices.

Free for 19 to 24-year-olds, the event on Monday, September 28, includes breakfast and the chance to meet representatives from a number of local businesses, including Lilac Films and Red Box Web Design.

Together with experts from organisations such as the Public Relations Consultants Organisation (PRCA) and the marketing team at Stafford and Rural Homes, the firms are keen to offer advice to young people and let them know what employers are looking for when they advertise a job.

Changeworks Managing Director, Sue Tupling, will also be inviting attendees to take part in a photoshoot to help boost their LinkedIn profile - something that is becoming increasingly important in an ever more competitive jobs market

"Although using social media is now second nature to most young people, few of them realise how it can impact on their future careers," Sue explained.

"We've all heard stories of how compromising posts on sites such as Facebook can put off potential employers, but the right online presence, particularly on business-to-business platforms such as LinkedIn, can have the opposite effect and boost their career chances.

"To help them develop an effective LinkedIn profile we'll be setting up a studio so they can start with a professional portrait photo to go alongside details of their experience, interests and other information that is useful to employers."

The event is being supported by Staffordshire County Council and the Public Relations Consultants Organisation (PRCA) whose Apprenticeship Recruitment and Schools Outreach officer, Katy Foster will be on hand to talk about opportunities across what is a highly competitive industry.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to take part in an after-event webinar with a leading LinkedIn expert.

Sue added: "This informal, low key event offers young people who are thinking of a career in PR the chance to chat to experts and get a feel for the industry whilst picking up some practical tips to help them get a foot on the career ladder.

"We would like to thank the other businesses who are taking time out from their busy schedules to support the event and Staffordshire County Council for hosting it at St Alban's House."

The skills event will take place between 10am and noon on Monday, September 28 and further details are available by contacting Sue Tupling on 01785 247588.
