What is Far infrared?
The
brightest Far Infrared object in the universe is a galaxy called
Messier 82, many pictures of which have been taken by the Herschel space
observatory and by Hubble (Image courtesy of NASA / ESA / STScI)
For many, the most familiar form of infrared heating is the tungsten halogen or quartz lamps that cast a red light and are popular for heating outdoor and large public spaces. These use either Short or Medium wave infrared but they are not the only option. Herschel Far infrared employs the third and most comfortable form of infrared and it is completely changing the way we heat ourselves.
Far infrared, also known as IR-C or ‘Long wave' operates in the wavelengths below 3 microns. Compared with Short or Medium wave infrared which operate in the very hot wavelengths above 3 microns and also shed visible light, Herschel Far infrared heaters emit much lower temperatures - typically around 100°C - and sheds no visible light.
This means that the heat produced is much gentler and feels like warm winter sun. Far infrared is the least transmissive into the skin of the three types of infrared but is actually the best absorbed by the blood and cells. It is known as ‘The Vital Range' - the optimum wavelength for human comfort heating.
Herschel Far Infrared panels operate at 85-95°C which is critical to maximise the emission of infrared and minimise convection from the panel. Herschel Far Infrared heaters require a watt density of no greater than 0.9kW/m2 over the entire panel surface area to produce this temperature; enabling a significant energy saving, a feeling of comfort as well as ensuring the panel is safe to touch.
Herschel Far infrared offers an unbeatable combination of price, efficiency, payback, ease of installation and comfort levels and the company's Inspire and Select panel ranges, together with their space heating ranges, are ideal for specification in homes, offices and a multitude of commercial applications.
