Aluminium and Magnesium Heat Treatment: Wallwork Achieve Nadcap Merit Programme Qualifying Approvals

Magnesium and aluminium are both highly reactive metals, but metal improvement specialist, Wallwork Group, has an established and growing heat treatment expertise in this field. Nadcap, the international aerospace accreditation body, has recognised this by extending the Bury site’s accreditation to cover both their aluminium and magnesium heat treatment processes. Only a handful of UK heat treatment companies have the expertise and technology to process aluminium and magnesium to aerospace industry standards. Even fewer companies that have this capability are Nadcap certified.

Unit business development manager, Ian Lacey explained, “We have a highly skilled team of metallurgical specialists and this has enabled us to win business to steadily grow market share. Many of our customers are technically demanding but find that they can rely on our technical expertise to develop suitable heat treatments to meet their precise needs and deliver consistently high quality standards.”

From satellite and aircraft components through to motorsport and sports cycle equipment, Wallwork processes complex parts varying from small pressed metal stampings through to large fabrications and castings. The company can heat-treat loads of up to two cubic metres in each process cycle in their high-tech furnaces. Wallwork laboratories provide a range of post treatment testing services including hardness, conductivity and mechanical testing.

Wallwork use integral quench furnaces to achieve a transfer time of just ten seconds or less from furnace to quench. Heating and cooling regimes are computer controlled for accuracy and consistency with a variety of cooling media from air cooling to the more usual cold or hot water quench. Wet polymer quenching is another option and, in addition, components can be subjected to post-quench freezing to prevent age hardening.

Nadcap operate a Merit Programme enabling sites that consistently achieve audits with no or low non-compliances to extend the interval for full audits to two years. Wallwork has been able to meet these demanding criteria. The company also has prime approval from Moog and is seeking specific approvals from other aerospace primes.

Using a company-owned dedicated fleet of vehicles, the company provide a complete nation-wide service. Vehicles commonly call on clients on a regular cycle to deliver and collect material for processing. Typically, commercial work is turned around in a 24 to 72 cycle. Aerospace work, where extensive post treatment quality assurance is often required, is typically returned in a 7-10 day cycle.

On Stand A55, Advanced Engineering 2015, knowledgeable Wallwork experts will be keen to solve visitor's heat treatment and hard coatings problems.
