Hobbies in the spotlight at event for older people

A wide range of hobbies, arts and crafts have been celebrated at a special event recognising the contributions made by older people.

Organised by Stafford and Rural Homes (SARH), the event at Jubilee Court in Stafford also featured live music and a host of other activities aimed at improving health and wellbeing.

Staff and guests turned out in fancy dress with a ‘hobbies' theme to join in celebrations to mark UK Older People's Day.

Elaine Tomlinson, SARH Extra Care Manager at Jubilee Court, explained: "Every year we invite our Independent Living customers to join us in celebrating this special day.

"This year the theme is centred around health and wellbeing through gardening, hobbies and crafts and everyone got into the spirit of the occasion.

"We were treated to some fantastic displays of their creative talents, alongside a little

nostalgia with a ‘chicken and chips in a basket' lunch and a talk on the history of famous 1970s nightspot Jollees."

Whilst Jubilee Court is home to around 40 SARH customers with additional care needs, its 18 other Independent Living Schemes cater for a wide range of people who enjoy additional security and the peace of mind of being part of a close-knit community without losing their independence.

The schemes are also ideal for older people who want to downsize but retain their own living space and the privacy of having their own front door.

Karen Armitage, SARH Chief Executive, added: "Older people make a fantastic contribution to our community, and events like this give us the chance to celebrate all they have achieved and the active life they enjoy.

"The event at Jubilee Court once again proved a huge success and I was overwhelmed by the talent and creativity on show."
