Ghost Town: 1981. Coventry, city of Two Tone and Ska.
Against a multicultural soundtrack epitomising the 80s a race war stirs between the young Asian community and white skinheads of a stereotypical British city. As tensions build, Ghost Town chases the drama from two sides of the story, getting to the burning centre of the racial tension that erupted across Britain in 1981. Photographer Baz, "too Paki to be white, too gora to be desi", captures the conflict on film while unemployed graduate Maia, "serial champion of liberal causes", is pregnant with a mixed-race child. Neither can afford to let the racists win. They must take a stand. But a stand will cost lives...
About the Author
Catriona Troth was born in Edinburgh, Scotland and grew up in Canada (apart from the time she spent 14 months travelling, accompanied by 14 pieces of luggage, to 14 countries with her parents). At 17, she returned to the UK - initially just for a year, but ended up staying. Catriona studied applied maths at Warwick University, and after more than 20 years spent writing technical reports at work and fiction on the commuter train, made the brave move into freelance writing. She has a regular column in literary magazine ‘Words with Jam', researches and writes articles for the website Quakers in the World and reviews books for Book Muse UK. She is very proud to be a member of Triskele Books. As part of this innovative publishing collective she has organised two Indie Author Fairs in the UK (pop-up bookshops that enable indie authors to interact directly with readers). The first was at the Chorleywood Literary Festival in 2014, the second at Foyles in London as part of the Indie Author Fringe Festival of the London Book Fair. Her writing explores themes of identity and childhood memory, borne from her early sense of dislocation. Travelling a lot as a child - she attended 10 different schools across three continents - Catriona felt something of a foreigner wherever she lived. She has now lived in the Chilterns longer than she has ever lived in anywhere, a fact that still comes as a surprise.
Media Opportunities
In 2016 it will be 35 years since the riots that affected so many cities throughout England from London (Brixton) to Leeds and Liverpool. Ghost Town author Catriona Troth is frequently asked to discuss the historic impact of the 1981 violence that spread around the country resulting in violent attacks, two murders, protests, counter-demonstrations and battles between skinheads and their opponents - especially young Asians - in Coventry. She is available to write editorial, for interview and comment. In October 2015, Catriona joined Specials bassist Horace Panter and Pauline Black, lead singer of The Selecter at WarwickArts Centre, for a panel discussion entitled:How did Coventry's Ska scene change Britain? In May 2016 Catriona will be discussing the 1981 riots and her book, Ghost Town, at Chalfont St Giles & Jordans LiteraryFestival.
