Value for money SUVs and crossovers dominate Hot Five

Three Renault-produced cars among fastest sellers for November

Value for money SUVs and crossovers dominate the Glass's Hot Five of the fastest selling used cars in November.

The Dacia Sandero Stepway heads the list, followed by the Hyundai Tuscon and Vauxhall Antara. In fourth and fifth place respectively are the Renault Captur and Dacia Sandero, bringing the total of Renault-produced cars in the Hot Five to three.

Rupert Pontin, Glass's Head of Valuations, said: "The market for 4x4s and SUVs shows no signs of slowing down and this month's Hot Five is a reflection of that fact, especially as we move into winter and people start to think about tougher driving conditions.

"What is perhaps most surprising about this list is the way in which it is dominated by value or semi-value brands. There is no sign of any of the prestige manufacturers. Buyers of these 4x4s and SUVs, as you can see from the relatively modest selling prices, are looking for well-priced daily transport.

"Value brands, especially Dacia, have figured very strongly in the Hot Five in recent months and it will be interesting to see how they perform as the number of their models on the used market grows over the next year or more."

Glass's Hot Five for September

Model Days to sell Average selling price Average age

  1. Dacia Sandero Stepway 15.6 £7,998 14.5 months

  2. Hyundai Tucson 28.1 £8,327 84.3 months

  3. Vauxhall Antara 28.8 £12,237 30.6 months

  4. Renault Captur 29.2 £12,670 11.1 months

  5. Dacia Sandero 29.6 £6,390 14.6 months

Commenting, Rupert Pontin, Glass's Head of Valuations, said:

  1. At 15.6 days to sale, the Sandero Stepway is flying off the forecourt. A mix of style, good specification levels and competitive finance packages means these are a really good used car choice for the family buyer. Low mileage and 14.5 months as an average age suggest these may be ex rental cars or perhaps short term PCP models coming back to the market.

  2. In second spot, the Hyundai Tucson perhaps highlights the fact that, as we move into the winter months, a combination of 4x4 capability and budget price has appeal to buyers from all sectors of the retail market. With good reliability and plenty of space, the Tucson has built quite a following of loyal customers.

  3. Vauxhalls Antara takes third spot and is similar in size and style to the Tucson. These models are likely to be the result of new car sales activity some 2.5 years ago and are coming to market with low mileage and at the just the right age to make the second owner appreciate their size, fit and finish. These are something of a well-kept secret although running costs are not always as low as expected.

  4. The funky Renault Captur is fun to drive, great to look at and, while they were slow to take off in the trade, they have become a popular retail car. A high driving position, compact yet spacious interior and good specification level means these are a great small family or second car.

  5. The standard version of Sandero takes fifth spot having been just beaten by the Captur. With a similar age and mileage profile to the leading placed Sandero Stepway, these have probably come from the same ex-leasing sources and also offer fantastic value for money.

About Glass's Hot Five

Glass's Hot Five is based on 300 models, all of which have been subject to more than 50 price observations over a four-week period. The set is then split by range, and an average is determined by the number of days that cars have been advertised on web portals. Published once a month, the Hot Five provides insight gleaned from GlassNet Radar, Glass's live retail pricing system that provides up-to-the-minute pricing around the country. This looks at average selling times for used cars based on the number of days that cars tend to stay on the forecourt. Providing the most accurate analysis of retail observations around the country, Radar has been improving profitability for dealers since its launch last year.
