New Lord Mayor of Cardiff takes office and announces chosen charities
Councillor Adrian Robson has been inaugurated as the new Lord Mayor of Cardiff
Cllr Robson was presented with the official chain of office at a ceremony in County Hall today, Thursday, May 22nd, during Cardiff Council's Annual General Meeting and becomes the 121st Lord Mayor of the City and County of Cardiff.
One of Cardiff's longest serving councillors with continuous service since 2004, Cllr Robson has had a lengthy and accomplished career in politics and has been dedicated to representing the ward of Rhiwbina for more than two decades. A keen follower of Formula One racing and an experienced public speaker, he has sat on many committees including the Planning Committee and is the former Chair of the Policy Review and Performance Committee. He has also sat on the School Governors Appointment Panel.
His wife, Councillor Jayne Cowan will serve as his Consort during his term and as Cardiff's current longest serving sitting councillor with continuous service since 1999, shares The Lord Mayor's commitment to their local community and the people of Cardiff.
With a background in public relations, Cllr Cowan sits on the Committees for Governance and Audit, Pensions, Glamorgan Joint Archives and on the Corporate Parenting Panel and has been a Governor at Greenhill Special School for 27 years.
The couple, who first met in 2001 and married at Cardiff's Council Chamber in 2003, are the first Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress for more than 40 years to both be serving councillors.
The Lord Mayor has nominated two charities to support during his term. The Forget-Me-Not Chorus, which was initially established in Rhiwbina, brings the joy of singing to people living with dementia, and those who support them by organising singing sessions for people with all forms of dementia, as well as the families, friends and professional staff looking after them.
Celebrating Dementia Action Week
Dementia Friendly Cardiff is marking this year's Dementia Action Week (May 19 - 25) by raising awareness of the importance of timely and accurate dementia diagnoses.
The movement, a partnership between Cardiff Council and Cardiff and Vale University Health Board working together to make Cardiff a Dementia Friendly City, is supporting Alzheimer's Society's annual action week once again to encourage people to act on dementia.
Receiving a diagnosis is a vital step for individuals living with dementia, as it enables them to access essential care, treatment, and support services.
This week is a timely opportunity to highlight the information, advice and support available on the Dementia Friendly Cardiff website, which includes useful information for those concerned about their memory, practical advice and signposting to further resources and support, as well details about regular events and activities held across the city for individuals living with dementia and their families.
New chapter for Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Edern
In February 2025, a new partnership arrangement to share and strengthen leadership responsibilities between Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf and Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Edern was agreed.
From September, a new chapter in the school's history will begin which will see the two schools collaborate for a two-year period, offering a wide range of benefits including strategic leadership, governance and management structures to focus on teaching, learning and raising standards, the sharing of resources and broader learning and social experiences for pupils.
Mr Matthew Evans, the current Headteacher of Ysgol Glantaf with more than 15 years of leadership experience within the Welsh Medium Sector in South Wales, will step into a new leadership role with strategic leadership responsibility for Ysgol Bro Edern and Ysgol Glantaf. "I'm delighted to work across both schools during the next few years in a role fully supported by the Local Authority, to build leadership capacity within the schools for the benefit of children and young people. Schools thrive when working alongside each other, working and learning from each other, within departments or at leadership level", said Mr Evans.
He added: "I'm looking forward to further strengthen the outstanding work of Bro Edern within their primary cluster, fostering community links and ensuring all pupils can thrive in our Welsh Medium environments. I relish the opportunity this partnership offers to further build on and strengthen quality Welsh Medium education throughout the city."
