Buzon creates the ideal rooting environment at Rathbone Market
When completed in 2016, the regeneration of Rathbone Market in Newham, London, will comprise around 650 new homes and a landscape featuring a series of semi-private podium gardens. These will incorporate a manmade lake, play areas, a water rill, seating and extensive areas of decked hardwood walkways supported on Buzon pedestals.
Buzon pedestals are easily adjustable in height and accommodate uneven and slopping surfaces. They were chosen for Rathbone Market because of their proven performance, durability and ease of installation as well as their ability to handle large live loads. The deck and pedestal arrangement at the development is designed to support live loads exceeding 2.5kn/m².
In the first completed phase of the development, the 800mm high Buzon pedestals allow for a void beneath the deck to accommodate soil into which large trees are planted. These protrude through the deck together with other planting while their roots grow under the deck and around the pedestals. This offers the important advantage of allowing a substantial root area for the trees without the need for deeper soil profiles. In addition, with the deck shading the soil, the soil remains cool and retains its moisture well, creating the ideal rooting environment.
Andrew Thornhill, Director of Churchman Landscape Architects, comments: "With the pedestals surrounded by soil, durability is key so the Buzon pedestals offer the perfect solution and enable precision decking to be laid out. The pedestals are incredibly versatile, solid and stable and, right from day one, there were never any problems at all."
