UTC Swindon gets 2015 recruitment drive on track Christmas at STEAM

UTC Swindon will be getting its 2015 student recruitment campaign underway at Christmas at STEAM 2014 in Swindon this weekend.

Along with Thermographic Consultancy, the college will show prospective students how to go from apprenticeship to entrepreneurship.

Director of Thermographic Consultancy, Stuart Holland will demonstrate a custom-built octocopter. This carries small, lightweight high definition cameras through the air and has thermal imaging capabilities.

The octocopter is flown from a ground operating station using piloting skill and complex onboard algorithms. The device, which uses GPS (global positioning system), can also follow pre-programmed flight paths.

A former apprentice, Stuart understands the value of strong foundations and engineering and manufacturing skills.

Looking forward to Christmas at STEAM, Stuart said: “As a partner of UTC Swindon, I love demonstrating unique areas of engineering to young people. My message to students is to make the very most of the opportunities UTC Swindon offers you. I wish it had been here when I was younger.”

Angela Barker-Dench, Principal at UTC Swindon, said, “Christmas at STEAM is an exciting opportunity for us to meet prospective students and their parents. We’ll be here to answer their questions and show people what we’ve already achieved since we opened in September.”

UTC Swindon caters for 600 students aged 14 to 19, providing courses for young people who aspire to a career in engineering. Students at the college can gain the skills necessary across all sectors of the engineering industries.

Thermographic Consultancy provides comprehensive surveys of electrical or mechanical installations for predictive maintenance regimes. The company also offers inspections to assess thermal efficiency and identify areas of costly energy loss.

Christmas at STEAM takes place at the Museum of the Great Western Railway, Swindon on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 December 2014 from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm. There’ll be live music, visits from Santa and a festive market. Admission costs £3.00 per person and £1.00 for children/concessions. Under 3s go free.
