UTC Swindon, Bristol Street, Swindon, SN1 5ET

UTC Swindon is inviting prospective students and their parents to find out more about the college and the jobs it could open doors to. It’s holding a careers day on Wednesday 17 June from 4 pm to 7 pm and an open day on Saturday 20 June from 10 am to 2 pm.

The UTC Swindon careers day is an opportunity to speak with leading local employers about opportunities beyond education. Companies attending the careers day include:

  • GWP Group, specialists manufacturer of protective packing options. Its products include presentation cases, suspended boxes, specialist coatings, engineered foam inserts, re-usable Correx boxes and custom-made flight cases
  • Ministry of Defence (MOD). Representative of MOD will be talking about the Defence Engineering and Science Group, which it describes as “probably the best graduate development scheme for engineers and scientists in the UK”
  • Atkins, one of the world's leading design, engineering and project management consultancies, offering unparalleled opportunities for talented individuals
  • Green Labyrinth, the government funded training provider. It offers work-based apprenticeships, study programmes and traineeships
  • Babcock, the UK's leading engineering support services company with over 27,000 staff

At the open day, potential students and parents will be able to meet UTC Swindon’s principal, Angela Barker-Dench, who Prime Minister David Cameron described as a “great leader,” and learn more about UTC Swindon.

Visitors can go on a guided tour around UTC Swindon’s £10 million state-of-the-art Bristol Street site. The tour takes in light-filled workshops and classrooms that reflect the workplace, the lecture theatre and a hub area where students can generate ideas, socialise and inspire others. The tours will be available from 10.00 am. There will be presentations every hour from 10.00 am and refreshments will be available throughout the day. College staff will be on hand to explain the curriculum.

Angela said: “It’s very exciting to be hosting our first careers day. There will be great variety of businesses here to give current and prospective students a fantastic insight into where their skills can take them. For the open day, we’re inviting prospective students and parents into the building to see the wonderful learning experience we offer. This will be a brilliant opportunity to show what we’ve achieved since September, so we’re looking forward to welcoming people to UTC Swindon.

UTC Swindon caters for 600 students aged 14 to 19, providing courses for young people who aspire to a career in engineering. Students at the college can gain the skills necessary across the engineering industries - as well as GCSEs and A-levels.

Students can join UTC Swindon in year 10 or year 12, studying fulltime from 8:30 am to 5 pm on Monday to Thursday and Friday from 8:30 am to 4 pm. This enables students to gain excellent qualifications at level 2 and 3, alongside the skills to be workplace ready or prepared for university.

UTC Swindon is run by a trust sponsored by Johnson Matthey Fuel Cells and Oxford Brookes University. There are over 90 different industry partners involved with the University Technical College.

As part of the original Great Western Rail works, the UTC Swindon site creates a link between the engineering history and the engineering future of the local area, with the Old School Building and the iconic Water Tower featuring prominently. Both structures, which are Grade II listed, were treated sympathetically, with the Water Tower being restored and brought back into educational use. Nick Gibb MP, Minister of State for School Reform, has called UTC Swindon “one of the best school buildings” he has ever seen[1].
